Red Clay Mugs by Tu Kaets Studios

  • $48.00

Handcrafted with red desert clay, these stark black & white crackle mugs are made right here in Tucson by Nathanael of Tu Kaets Studios! Each one is shaped with iron-rich red clay, and glazed with a glossy black, and then a thinner white glaze that evaporates in the desert sun, leaving completely unique patterns showing the deep black underneath. That means every mug is one of a kind, and made in collaboration with the sun itself!

Pieces measure approx. 3.5" tall x 3.5" diameter.

Due to their handmade nature the exact size, shape, and design may vary slightly from the photo.

Nathanael Addison has been working with clay since 2005, and formed Tu Kaets Studios in 2012. “Tu Kaets” is the international phonetic alphabet spelling of “two cats," a name inspired by the original two cats that ‘inspected’ Nathanael's early pottery. His work is inspired by features of the Sonoran Desert, with pierced vessels that hint at the structure of cacti skeletons, and iron-rich red clay mugs that reflect Tucson's mineral-abundant landscapes. Tu Kaets reuses every scrap of clay, and repurposes unused glaze into new colors and textures. All pottery is dried and warmed in the sun before firing, to minimize breakage and reduce energy consumption.
